South Dakota’s new West River outdoor shooting range has quickly become a hub for shooting enthusiasts, logging over 30,000 visits in just the first five months since its opening. Designed to accommodate various shooting disciplines, the complex has exceeded the Game, Fish and Parks Department's initial estimate, which anticipated these numbers for the entire year. Contributing to this surge is a favorable weather pattern throughout winter and the sale of numerous memberships. Compounded by a projected revenue of nearly $100,000, this early success suggests a strong demand for outdoor shooting facilities in the region.
Fulfilling a long-standing need, the range is equipped with facilities for long-range shooting, clay target shooting, and tactical exercises. Moreover, events are already filling the calendar, with competitions expected to attract hundreds of participants, alongside routine use for law enforcement training.
The development of the range has faced scrutiny, particularly with regard to its funding sources and the discovery of tribal artifacts during initial land surveys, which led to a strategic decision to proceed without federal money. Instead, the project garnered substantial support, including a significant investment from gun-industry stakeholders. However, the financial journey has not been smooth, with initial costs escalating dramatically from estimates of around $9.9 million to a final price tag of approximately $20 million by its groundbreaking.
