The incident occurred just before 3:30 AM during orientation week, prompting a campus-wide lockdown and shelter-in-place order for over 400 attendees. New Mexico State Police Chief Troy Weisler announced that 18-year-old John Fuentes, who had arrived on campus the previous evening, was apprehended at 2:30 PM in Los Lunas after a multi-agency manhunt. According to court documents, Fuentes appeared to be under the influence before opening fire, striking the younger victim in the head. Campus security and shot-spotter technology helped local law enforcement pinpoint the shooting shortly after midnight. University Police Chief Joseph Silva commended the coordinated response: Our active-shooter drills and integrated shot-spotter systems undoubtedly saved lives tonight. Both victims were residents of Casas del Rio; the 19-year-old remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
