An initial shelterinplace alert went out just before 3:30a.m., and the university remained closed for the remainder of the day as law enforcement secured the scene and evacuated over 400 students participating in orientation. New Mexico State Police Chief TroyWeisler announced that 18yearold JohnFuentes was arrested around 2:30p.m. in LosLunas following a multiagency pursuit. Court documents reveal Fuentes arrived on campus the night before and joined three other students in a dorm room, where he appeared to be under the influence before opening fire. The 14yearold victim was shot in the head and died at the scene; the 19yearold was evacuated to UNM Hospital with lifethreatening injuries. University Police Chief JosephSilva praised the swift, coordinated response among UNM Police, New Mexico State Police, and campus security, noting that shotspotter technology helped pinpoint the shots just after midnight. We trained for activeshooter scenarios, and that readiness undoubtedly saved lives, Silva said.
