Federal authorities have charged a 19-year-old from Ann Arbor, Michigan, named Armon Carleton Daniel for allegedly possessing illegal machine gun conversion devices and firearms. An investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), in collaboration with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), traced Daniel's activities back to posts on his Instagram account, where he allegedly boasted about his firearms and machine gun conversion devices (MCDs). These MCDs are aftermarket devices that allow semi-automatic firearms to fire in fully automatic mode.
The ATF’s investigation yielded significant findings when they discovered images associated with Daniel's account, including posts referencing violent activity and firearms capable of automatic fire. One post reportedly indicated involvement in a shooting incident in Detroit, where a woman was injured. Additionally, records indicated that MCDs purchased by Daniel were shipped directly to his Ann Arbor address.
On May 29, 2026, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Daniel's home, where they found a stolen Anderson Manufacturing AR-style pistol alongside a loaded magazine and an MCD. During questioning, Daniel claimed to have a long-standing interest in firearms and ammunition, admitting ownership of the Instagram account but denying possessing firearms.
The ATF's findings have also linked Daniel to a series of shootings across Southeast Michigan, suggesting a pattern of illegal gun activity and raising concerns about the trafficking of dangerous firearms modifications within youth circles online.
