Hot Springs, Arkansas, has launched a new community-led initiative, 'Teen Safety Night and Parent Forum,' designed to tackle gun violence and empower local youth, all in remembrance of Jadyn Walker, a 20-year-old Hot Springs native tragically shot and killed on March 20, 2023. Known affectionately as 'JJ' or '5' (after his basketball jersey number), Walker was a beacon of light in his community, both on and off the court. This weekly session, hosted at Roanoke Baptist Church, aims to provide essential life skills and foster a safe environment for teens and their families to address the challenges they face, directly combating the type of violence that claimed Jadyn's life. Following her son's death, Chiquita Carter, Jadyns mother, founded Jadyns Wings of Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending gun violence, supporting grieving families, and empowering youth through mentorship, counseling, and education. Carter eloquently expressed her motivation, stating, 'Ive just turned my pain into purpose, and I just want to make sure that my sons name lives on,' emphasizing the organization's mission to keep Jadyn's legacy alive through proactive community engagement. The 'Teen Safety Night' is specifically tailored for Garland County youth aged 13 to 17 and is hosted in partnership with the Stop the Violence Coalition of Hot Springs. Each Tuesday session, running until September 2, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., features open discussions, practical life-skills training, role-playing exercises, and Q&A segments, all within a supportive and welcoming atmosphere. Concurrently, parents participate in separate forums focused on enhancing communication, building trust, and understanding the unique pressures confronting today's teenagers. Since its inception, Jadyns Wings of Hope has made a tangible impact, awarding thousands of dollars in scholarships, providing crucial grief therapy, and organizing events like the 'Hero 5 Walk' to honor victims of gun violence. The organization collaborates with other local partners, including the High Impact Movement and the Boys & Girls Club of Hot Springs, with Carters ultimate vision being the establishment of a dedicated community center in Jadyns name.
