IWI stands for Israel Weapon Industries, an Israeli firearms manufacturer renowned for military designs such as the Tavor and Galil. Among its innovative creations is the IWI Masada, a budget-priced polymer, striker-fired pistol crafted for duty use, which was released in 2017. Available in both Standard and Tactical versions, the Masada features a threaded barrel which enhances its versatility, along with ambidextrous controls and a magazine capacity of 17+1. A slim model specifically designed for carry purposes is also on offer.
The Masada operates on a chassis system similar to the SIG P320, where the fire control unit is considered the serialized component. As the popularity of the Masada continues to grow, expect a host of companies like Mischief Machine to provide replacement grip modules for enhanced customization.
At first glance, the Masada didn’t capture my attention much. This particular unit from the Guns.com Certified Used Inventory features a limited run color that’s merely average in appearance. However, having the gun in hand, it offers a solid, reliable feeling akin to the size of a Glock 17, complete with a 4.6-inch threaded barrel. The trigger pull weighs in at around 4 pounds—good enough for duty, yet it doesn’t provide a clean break suitable for competition.
However, the shooting experience was where the Masada truly excelled. Accuracy at 15 yards proved to be better than expectations, exhibiting a reliable performance during drills. Its low bore axis and lightweight composition contribute to quick transitions, making it adaptable enough for competition, defense, or carry situations.
One standout feature of the Masada is its impressive grip. It fits the hand at an optimal angle, ensuring a secure hold through multiple hand shapes, thanks to its included backstraps which add both length and volume. Although the grip texture may be less aggressive, it remains sufficient to maintain control during use.
Taking advantage of its threaded barrel, I attached a Banish 45 suppressor. This titanium suppressor accommodates a variety of pistol calibers and proved to be an outstanding host for the Masada, delivering a satisfying performance through numerous types of ammunition without any issues.
Equipped with suppressor-height iron sights, I incorporated a Gideon Optics red dot sight, known for their exceptional value and performance. The Masada’s design allows for a secure mount with its long screws going through a spacer plate into the slide, complemented by four adapter plates and selectable screws enhancing its versatility. To accommodate the complete system, I used a Hush Holster that seamlessly fits the pistol with the suppressor attached, locking onto a Streamlight TLR-1 weapon light positioned on the Masada’s Picatinny rail.
In summary, the IWI Masada delivers an impressive performance characterized by its adaptability, ease of use, and innovative design features, appealing to a wide range of users, from tactical operators to concealed carriers.
ShoQ's Take: The IWI Masada is a noteworthy addition to the mid-priced pistol category, demonstrating an emphasis on user ergonomics and adaptability. Its potential as both a duty weapon and a suppressor host makes it a versatile choice for those in the firearms community. As industry chatter builds around its performance, it may soon become a staple on ranges nationwide. Keep an eye on the Masada’s evolution as competition heats up in this segment.
