Seven years after the tragic 2018 Antioch Waffle House mass shooting, the mother of a victim, state Rep. Shaundelle Brooks, is speaking out as the convicted killer, Travis Reinking, seeks a new trial. Reinking was found guilty in 2022 on 16 charges, including the murders of Akilah Dasilva and three others. Brooks sons, Abede and Akilah Dasilva, were both present during the horrific event, with Abede being the sole survivor among them. Abede vividly recalled the chaos, hearing gunshots moments after celebrating a new music video with his brother. Reinkings lawyers have filed a motion arguing he was denied a fair chance to present evidence of his mental illness, also alleging the state misled the jury on the legal definition of insanity and exploited racial biases. Brooks, who has tirelessly advocated for gun reform since her sons death, including introducing 'Akilah's Law' in the General Assembly, expressed her profound distress at reliving the trauma. Prosecutors contend Reinking was not insane and that the attack was calculated, citing his flight from police for over 30 hours and preparation of a go-bag. Abede Dasilva remains skeptical of Reinkings chances for an overturned conviction. Brooks powerfully stated, Mental illness should never be an excuse for murder. You took four lives. Are you saying that you dont want to be held accountable? and questioned the taxpayer expense for a new trial bid.
