In partnership with the Albemarle County Sheriffs Office and three local shooting ranges, the program provides discounted courses in basic marksmanship, safe handling, and legal compliance. Under the universitys policy which still prohibits firearms on campus in instructional buildings participants can enroll in weekend workshops at partner ranges, with transportation provided by UVAs safety department. We recognize that some members of our community legally carry off campus, and we have a duty to ensure theyre properly trained, said Dean of Students Patricia Owens. The program also incorporates modules on mentalhealth resources and suicide prevention, responding to concerns about rising youth suicide rates involving firearms.
