On July 3, 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the omnibus reconciliation package now known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, advancing to President Trumps desk after Senate approval earlier this week. A centerpiece for Second Amendment advocates is a provision eliminating the longstanding $200 excise tax on suppressors, shortbarreled rifles, and other regulated firearms under the National Firearms Act (NFA). The change effectively removes a significant financial barrier for Americans legally purchasing technologically-enhanced firearms under NFA law. The NRAILA, among other gun rights organizations, praised the development. In an official statement, NRA President Bill Bachenberg said this marks a gamechanging victory for gun owners, while EVP Doug Hamlin noted that costs for buying suppressors and SBRs are now reduced to zero. The policy shift is expected to increase civilian interest in NFA-regulated items. From a tactical standpoint, suppressors not only lower sound signaturehelping with hearing protection and shooter comfortbut also reduce muzzle blast and recoil, making them an asset for precision shooters and instructors. That said, opponents caution that more accessible suppressor ownership could raise public safety concerns. Still, in states where suppressors are already legal, many see this as a long-overdue modernization. With President Trump indicating support, the bill is likely to become law. Gun industry analysts predict a surge in suppressor and short-barreled firearm sales, while training providers could see increased demand for NFA compliance education. Now attention turns to vehicle regulations, interstate transport policies, and whether federal rulemaking will follow.
