✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Charlottesville, VirginiaCHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- Virginia Democrats are wasting no time and are getting things ready for next years General Assembly following Tuesdays sweeping win in the state elections. One of the major pushes expectedto emerge in the next years session is gun control legislation, particularly after numerous bills have faced vetoes from the current administration. State Senator Creigh Deeds has expressed that there is substantial work ahead as they aim to build a legislative framework that not only passes through the General Assembly but effectively benefits Virginia residents. Its intensified in the last few days. Honestly, on this day, I have already had to, by the middle of the day, four meetings already on different bills and ideas we are working on, stated Deeds. He added that there is often a misconception surrounding their approach to gun legislation. We want to respect peoples constitutional rights, but we want to keep our communities as safe as we can, Deeds emphasized, underlining the challenge in balancing constitutional rights with community safety. Angela Ferrell-Zabala, Executive Director with Moms Demand Action, shared that there are viable solutions that do not infringe upon Virginians' Second Amendment rights. We have many gun owners and folks apart from our advocacy that know what it means to be a responsible gun owner. We want to make sure that if you are a gun owner, you are a responsible gun owner, noted Ferrell-Zabala. That there are policies put in place that protect our community, our civilians across the commonwealth. Deeds highlighted specific legislative priorities that include addressing issues like leaving guns unlocked in cars, and extending waiting periods for gun purchases. Another crucial focus area involves gun concerns at universities. Among the bills will be the legislation that Delegate [Katrina] Callsen and I have carried to address the shootings at the University of Virginia, to give police the ability to investigate those cases. This involves making possession of a firearm on a university campus a Class I misdemeanor, Deeds stated, referencing the urgency for such measures. As Virginia moves forward in this legislative session, it remains to be seen how these proposed changes will influence the states gun culture. There are mixed feelings among gun owners regarding more stringent gun laws, particularly those who believe that current policies already respect individual rights. The upcoming legislative session could reshape the landscape of gun ownership and safety in Virginia, marking a significant shift in how the state addresses gun control. The dialogue continues as advocates and legislators alike strive to find common ground respecting Second Amendment rights while enhancing community safety and responsibility in gun ownership. With high engagement from both sides of the legislative aisle, the next few months will be critical in determining the direction of Virginias gun laws.
