(CBS19 NEWS) -- Virginia Democrats are wasting no time and are getting things ready for next years General Assembly after Tuesdays sweeping win in the state elections. One of the big pushes expected to come with the next years session is gun control legislation, after many bills have faced vetoes from the current administration. State Senator Creigh Deeds emphasized that there is a substantial amount of work to be done before the upcoming session, underscoring their priority of building effective legislation that can pass through the General Assembly. Its intensified in the last few days. Honestly, on this day, I have already had to, by the middle of the day, four meetings already on different bills and ideas we are working on, said Deeds, who is looking to streamline the crafting of new policies. Deeds highlighted a common misconception regarding the approach to gun legislation, stating, We want to respect peoples constitutional rights, but we want to keep our communities as safe as we can. This dual focus on rights and responsibilities reflects the challenges lawmakers face in navigating the polarized gun rights paradigm in Virginia. Angela Ferrell-Zabala, Executive Director of Moms Demand Action, reinforced this sentiment, advocating for responsible gun ownership and the need for community protection without infringing on Second Amendment rights. We want to make sure that if you are a gun owner, you are a responsible gun owner, Ferrell-Zabala said. There are policies put in place that protect our community, our civilians across the commonwealth. Among the slew of measures being discussed, details emerged regarding cracking down on gun owners who leave firearms unsecured in vehicles and extending the waiting period for gun purchases. Deeds is also pushing for legislation that addresses gun possession on university campuses, in light of recent tragic shootings at the University of Virginia. This proposed legislation would categorize unauthorized firearm possession on campus as a Class I misdemeanor, signaling a strong stance against gun violence in educational settings. As the General Assembly session approaches, it will be critical for legislators to strike a balance between individual rights and community safety. The reenergizing of gun legislation in Virginia comes at a time when the national discourse around firearm policies grows increasingly volatile amidst various public safety debates. These proposed changes are likely to affect not just Virginia residents but also set precedents for other states grappling with gun legislation. Local discussions around responsible ownership and public safety are likely to resonate as lawmakers refine their positions ahead of debates. Early reports suggest that this initiative reflects a broader national trend among Democratic-led states to tighten gun regulations after experiencing shifts in electoral power.
