Corporal Austin Rice from the Webster County Sheriffs Office reported that a significant number of thefts occur when homeowners are away, creating ideal opportunities for would-be thieves. It was emphasized that firearms left unprotected, whether at home or in a vehicle, are prime targets. To help combat this growing issue, law enforcement advocates filling out documentation that tracks the serial numbers of firearms. This documentation not only aids in recovery if stolen but serves as a deterrent against theft altogether. Local business owner Jason Radney, who runs Cherokee Firearms, shared his own strategy for keeping his firearms secure. According to Radney, the best practice begins at the point of purchase. "When you purchase a firearm from us, as well as many other stores in the area, we will give you a separate receipt that has a serial number on that as well as it being on the box. So I keep the box, I dont ever get rid of an original box in my safe with my firearms, I keep the receipt in a file in my filing cabinet in my office," he explained. The importance of knowing how to identify a firearm in case of theft was underscored. Aside from the receipt, serial numbers are typically found near the guns receiver, making them essential for identification. If one should discover that a firearm has gone missing, the sheriffs office stresses the need for quick action. Rice stated, "If you notice your firearm is missing, its crucial to provide law enforcement with a detailed description of it. This includes the serial number, any distinctive marks, damage, engravings, or anything unusual about the firearm. Such details can significantly aid in tracking the firearm down."
