The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds hunters that the 2025 gun deer season opens on Saturday, Nov. 22, and runs through Sunday, Nov. 30. This season runs later in the month compared to past years, which may influence deer movement based on varying environmental factors. Recent assessments indicate that with colder temperatures and potential snow cover, hunters may encounter better conditions compared to previous seasons with earlier openers. Through Oct. 31, 2025, year-to-date sales for hunting licenses, including gun, bow, and crossbow, have reached an impressive total of 463,983. Notably, 137,394 of these licenses are exclusively for gun hunting, marking an important indicator of hunting interest in the state. This trend aligns with a growing enthusiasm for outdoor activities among Wisconsins residents. Changes have also been made to the Deer Management Units (DMUs) for the upcoming season. Hunters must take note that DMUs in the Northern Forest Management Zones have transitioned from a county-based to a habitat-based structure. This change necessitates that hunters review the updated DMU mapping to ensure compliance and understanding, particularly when requesting antlerless permits. The revision in DMU classifications reflects an adaptable approach to wildlife management in the face of shifting ecological conditions. Additionally, all harvested deer are required to be registered electronically by 5 p.m. the day after recovery. The DNR emphasizes the importance of this practice for maintaining accurate wildlife management data. Registration can be conducted via three methods, one of which includes a dedicated phone line at 1-844-426-3734, facilitating an efficient process for hunters. In terms of safety, the DNR reiterates the necessity of identifying one's target accurately, especially considering elk can wander outside their designated management zones during the fall breeding season. Hunters are cautioned that any elk harvested without a proper tag may incur fines and the possible revocation of their hunting licenses. To promote safety and preparedness, hunters are urged to adhere to the four cardinal rules of firearm safety: treat every firearm as if it is loaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, be certain of your target, and ensure that your finger remains outside the trigger guard until ready to shoot. Compliance with clothing requirements, specifically the necessity of at least 50% of outer clothing above the waist being blaze orange or fluorescent pink, is crucial for maintaining visibility and safety in the field. Moreover, individuals born on or after January 1, 1973, are mandated to possess hunter education certification unless they are hunting under the Mentored Hunting Law. The DNR provides resources for education and training to enhance safe practices among hunters, which is critical for community safety and the preservation of hunter education values. The DNR also encourages participation in the Deer Donation Program, which aims to support food pantries and assist residents in need throughout Wisconsin by distributing harvested deer to local communities. With the opening day of the gun season approaching, there is palpable excitement among hunters who are preparing for the opportunity to engage with Wisconsins rich hunting traditions and environmental landscapes. The DNR continues to advocate for responsible hunting and ethical practices that contribute positively to both wildlife management and community engagement.
