Wisconsin’s gun deer season opens Nov. 22
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Wisconsin, USAThe Wisconsin 2025 gun deer season is set to open on November 22 and will run through November 30. This years schedule mirrors that of last year, with the season commencing later in the month. One might wonder how such timing could affect deer movements. Historically, the later opener may mean fewer deer are on the move compared to years with earlier start dates. Hunters need to be aware of the surrounding conditions, such as colder temperatures and potential snow cover, which could enhance the chances of a fruitful hunt. As of October 31, year-to-date sales for various hunting licenses, including gun, bow, crossbow, sports, and patron licenses, have tallied up to an impressive 463,983. Of this, 137,394 licenses are specifically for gun privileges only, emphasizing the continued interest in gun hunting across the state. Hunters should take note of updates to some of the Deer Management Units (DMUs) that will affect regulations for the upcoming season. Particularly, DMUs in the Northern Forest Management Zones have been restructured from county-based units to habitat-based units. These units are now identified by number, rather than name, which means hunters will need to familiarize themselves with their designated DMU name or number when applying for antlerless permits. Harvested deer must be registered electronically by 5 p.m. the day following recovery. To ensure a smooth registration process, hunters will need to obtain the unique harvest authorization number linked to each permit. This system not only streamlines registration but also provides crucial data to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and County Deer Advisory Councils tasked with managing the state's deer population. There are three available options for registering deer: online using GameReg, via phone at 844-426-3734, or by visiting a designated registration station in person. Its vital for hunters to remain vigilant, particularly concerning elk populations which may wander outside of designated management zones during the fall breeding season. Proper target identification is crucial as the consequences of mistaking an elk for a deer can result in substantial fines and possible revocation of ones hunting license. Safety is paramount as the season opens, and hunters must ensure their visibility in the field. It is mandated that at least 50% of outer clothing above the waist must be either blaze orange or fluorescent pink. This requirement also extends to headgear, ensuring hunters are adequately seen. Clothing that appears faded or stained should be replaced to adhere to these safety standards. A point of caution for younger or new hunters: anyone born on or after January 1, 1973, is required to possess a hunter education certification to obtain a hunting license, unless they are hunting under the Mentored Hunting Law. This necessity highlights a societal shift towards ensuring that ethics and safety in hunting practices are emphasized. Additionally, Wisconsin's DNR encourages hunters to consider donating their harvested deer through its Deer Donation Program, which helps to stock food pantries and support local communities. This initiative not only assists those in need but also contributes positively to the community perception of hunting as a responsible activity. To support hunters further, the DNR has created an Online Deer Camp, a comprehensive resource offering essential information regarding purchasing licenses, regulations, shooting hours, public land maps, and more. This digital merge of tradition and modernization is a significant step in enhancing the hunting experience in Wisconsin. As we approach the gun deer season, hunters are reminded of the blend of tradition, etiquette, and responsibility that accompanies their pursuits in the woods.
