✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍Maplewood, MinnesotaIn a curious incident in Maplewood, Minnesota, a woman who was out for a stroll with her dog made a startling discoverya loaded gun. The event took place near the intersection of Century Avenue South and Linwood Avenue East, an area that police say has not seen such occurrences recently. According to police reports, the woman initially thought the firearm was a toy until she felt its weight, quickly realizing the gravity of her find. She promptly alerted the Maplewood police, who responded to collect the firearm, identified as a Springfield XD .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun. Nearby, officers found a broken holster discarded about 15 feet from where the gun was discovered. Lt. Joe Steiner from the Maplewood Police Department commented on the alarming risks associated with an unattended firearm. He highlighted two potential dangers: a person with criminal intent finding the weapon or, more tragically, a child stumbling upon it, leading to possible harm. "Gun owners need to be responsible for their firearms at all times," Steiner stressed. "Losing a firearm or having it stolen should be reported to the police immediately, including providing the serial number for recovery purposes." In this particular case, the found firearm has not been reported as stolen or missing. Following standard protocol, police ran the handgun through NIBIN, the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, which yielded no connection to any ongoing criminal investigation. This leaves many questions as to how the firearm ended up in a public space. Investigators are working to trace the guns origin. Lt. Steiner noted, There is a shooting range that the St. Paul Police Department operates, and we have already communicated with them. However, they have no missing firearm reports. This lack of leads has left the police department fairly stumped, especially given that local ranges are typically aware of their inventory, making the situation particularly perplexing. Adding to the intrigue, the information about the firearm has been forwarded to the ATFs National Tracing Center for further investigation, although the ongoing government shutdown may delay these efforts, according to some official commentary. With growing concerns about gun safety in public spaces, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities already placed on gun owners. As police prepare for potential negligence charges if the gun's owner is identified and if negligence is determined, public awareness is crucial. Maplewood police are advising the community to be cautious and to report any firearms found in public places immediately, ensuring that these situations are handled appropriately. This incident not only raises awareness about the risks with misplaced firearms but also highlights the extensive responsibilities gun owners carry. As discussions around firearm safety hardware continue, more guidance is needed regarding public interactions with firearms. Citizens are urged to familiarize themselves with local laws and manufacturer guidance to mitigate risks, especially with children around.
