Youth pheasant hunt planned in November
📅
✍️By ZRIntel Editorial Team📍New Alexander, OhioNew Alexander, Ohio The Columbiana County Federation of Conservation Clubs, in partnership with the Ohio Division of Wildlife, is set to launch its inaugural youth pheasant hunt on November 1st and 2nd at the Zepernick Wildlife Area. This significant event aims to provide young hunters with an opportunity to engage in pheasant hunting while applying skills they have honed throughout the year. The event begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday and runs until sunset, continuing from sunrise to sunset on Sunday. Organizers plan to release 100 ring-necked pheasants prior to the hunt, allowing youth hunters the chance to harvest two male pheasants along with other legal game such as rabbits and squirrels. There are many ongoing youth activities at several Wildlife Conservation Clubs throughout the county. This is a new addition that gives young hunters a chance to put into practice the skills they've learned from our programs, including safety, hunting techniques, shooting, and trapping,'' said Jeff Herrick, Treasurer of the Federation and the event organizer. This event is especially significant as it marks the Federation's first foray into organizing a pheasant hunt for youths. Herrick highlighted how many of the county's young residents have previously participated in hunting camps and youth days, developing a foundational knowledge of hunting safety and techniques. Many of our countys youths have attended hunting camps and youth days for many years. This hunt is a good opportunity for them to use the many hunting and safety skills they have learned at these events,'' Herrick emphasized. To participate, youths are required to possess a valid youth hunting license and to have successfully completed a hunter education course. They must also be accompanied by a non-hunting adult aged 18 or older. For those who have not completed the hunter safety course, youths may still participate using an apprentice license, provided they are accompanied by a non-hunting adult aged 21 or older who has a valid hunting license. One of the appealing aspects of this event is that it is free for participants. Pre-registration is not necessary, making it an accessible option for many young hunting enthusiasts. Maps and further information will be provided at the main parking lot of Zepernick Lake on Saturday morning, ensuring that all participants are well-informed and prepared before they embark on their hunting experience. In the broader context, this youth pheasant hunt aligns with current trends in hunting education, which emphasize safe practices and mentorship. Programs like these not only foster a safe hunting culture but also ensure that future generations develop a love for the sport. As conservation organizations work to engage youth in outdoor activities, initiatives like the Columbiana County youth pheasant hunt serve as vital educational experiences, promoting skills such as marksmanship, ethical hunting, and cooperation with nature.
